Releasing a Music Video to YouTube: Editing, Metadata and Premieres

YouTube is still the world's second-largest discovery engine. A correctly-released music video can drive years of search traffic — and the technical steps that unlock that visibility are simpler than most artists assume.

Edit for the first 15 seconds

YouTube weighs retention in the first 15 seconds heavily. Open with the strongest visual and audio moment — not a slow intro. The watch-through rate from second 0 to second 15 will determine whether the algorithm surfaces your video.

Metadata that wins

  • Title format: “Artist Name — Song Title (Official Music Video)”
  • Description: 2-paragraph context + lyrics excerpt + links
  • Tags: artist name, song name, genre, mood
  • Thumbnail: high contrast face shot or key visual

Premiere or upload?

Premieres turn a video drop into a live event with live chat. Use them for major singles. For album rollouts, regular uploads work better because fans don't want to schedule 12 premieres in one day.
