Building a Pitch Sheet That Lands Spotify Editorial Playlists

Editorial pitching is the single most important pre-release activity for indie artists. Most pitches fail because they say too much, not too little.

Building a Pitch Sheet That Lands Spotify Editorial Playlists

Spotify's editorial team reviews thousands of pitches each week. A great pitch is short, specific and easy to triage in 30 seconds. Your job is to make their job easier.

What goes into a pitch

  • The one track you want pitched (not the whole album)
  • Genre, mood and tempo that matches an existing playlist style
  • A two-sentence story behind the track
  • Any concrete release plan signals (TikTok campaign, PR, support shows)

What kills a pitch

Adjective-heavy descriptions like “genre-bending” or “unique sound that defies categorization” signal that you don't know where your music fits — and the editorial team has no way to place it on a playlist.

Specificity wins. “Late-night indie folk for solo drives” beats “evocative singer-songwriter masterpiece.”

Timing

Pitch at least 7 days before release. Earlier pitches give editorial more time to schedule placements and often perform better.
